The mismatch between how your body is built to move and how the modern workday actually unfolds isn’t just a wellness talking point, it’s backed by some genuinely fascinating evolutionary biology.

What Hunter-Gatherers Can Teach Us About Sitting

In 2020, researchers led by evolutionary biologist David Raichlen at the University of Southern California studied the Hadza, a hunter-gatherer community in Tanzania whose lifestyle resembles how humans lived for most of our evolutionary history. The surprising finding wasn’t that the Hadza move more than people in industrialised countries, though they do, it was that they rest almost exactly as much. Hadza adults spent close to ten hours a day inactive, nearly identical to sedentary time recorded in the US, the Netherlands and Australia.

What differed was how they rested. Instead of chairs, the Hadza squat, kneel or sit on the ground, postures that keep the muscles in the legs and trunk lightly engaged even while otherwise still. Using wearable sensors and muscle activity monitors, the researchers found squatting and kneeling required meaningfully more lower-limb muscle activity than sitting in a chair, and that the Hadza show little of the cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk usually tied to long periods of sitting. The researchers called this an “inactivity mismatch”: our bodies likely evolved for a lot of downtime, just not the kind spent slumped in a chair with almost no muscle activity at all.

Chairs Are the Problem, Not Rest Itself

This reframes the usual advice. The issue was never that people rest too much. It’s that a chair, unlike a squat or a kneel, essentially switches the muscles off. A separate line of research backs this up: when back muscles go without real activity for several hours, measurable stiffness sets in, and reintroducing brief, regular contractions prevents it. Your body isn’t punishing you for resting, it’s responding to a kind of stillness that barely existed before office chairs did.

Why This Is Showing Up More in How Workplaces Operate

This is part of why the conversation around corporate health fitness has shifted over the past few years, away from treating it as a gym perk and toward treating it as a structural fix for a genuinely new problem. Office work is a very recent invention on an evolutionary timescale, and the human body hasn’t caught up to eight-hour static sitting any more than it’s caught up to a diet of ultra-processed food. Standing desks, walking meetings and scheduled movement breaks aren’t fads so much as attempts to reintroduce the kind of low-level, constant muscle engagement our physiology seems to expect.

What This Actually Means for Your Workday

None of this requires abandoning a desk job or convincing your employer to install floor cushions. A few practical takeaways come directly out of the research:

  • Movement quality matters as much as movement quantity. The Hadza aren’t healthier because they move for more total hours. They’re healthier because their resting posture keeps muscles lightly active. A two-minute squat break does more for that inactivity mismatch than staring at your chair wondering if you should stand.
  • Frequent small interruptions beat one long session. Since the harm comes from sustained muscular stillness, breaking sitting time into shorter blocks throughout the day addresses the actual mechanism, rather than trying to outrun it with a single evening workout.
  • Changing position counts as exercise, in a sense. Kneeling on the floor for a phone call, squatting to grab something off a low shelf, or simply standing while thinking through a problem all reactivate the muscles a chair puts to sleep.
  • Consistency matters more than intensity here. This isn’t about training harder. It’s about not spending ten straight hours in the one posture your body never actually evolved to tolerate.
  • The environment shapes the behaviour more than willpower does. The Hadza aren’t more disciplined than office workers, they simply don’t have chairs designed to remove effort from resting. A desk setup that makes standing or shifting position the easy default will beat good intentions almost every time.

The Bigger Picture

There’s something genuinely useful in knowing that the discomfort of a long desk day isn’t a personal failing or a sign you need to try harder at self-discipline. It’s a mismatch between a body shaped by a few million years of squatting, walking and kneeling, and a workday shaped by about a century of office furniture. That distinction changes what the fix looks like. It isn’t about forcing in more exercise to compensate for a day of stillness. It’s about not letting the stillness happen in the first place, whether that comes from a five-minute break every hour, a walk during a call, or a workplace that’s actually been designed with movement built into it rather than engineered out. Even small design choices, a bench instead of a boardroom chair, a standing option at a shared desk, add up in ways that are easy to underestimate.

Our bodies were never really built for chairs. The good news is that fixing that doesn’t require reinventing your day, just interrupting it a little more often than feels natural. The Hadza aren’t running marathons in their downtime, they’re simply resting in a way that keeps the body doing a small amount of the work a chair quietly takes away. That’s a far more achievable target than most fitness advice, and it’s grounded in what our species actually spent most of its history doing.
