Risk Without Regret – My Story

Interview Click the image to listen to the podcast or click HERE

We all have a story. We all have had trials, failures and success of some kind.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down and tell my story on the Risk Without Regret radio show.

There is a reason I share this outside of self promotion. It’s for only one reason really – to show others that we all have to overcome adversity and we are all human. The choice of success and failure is ours and no one else.

You see for over a decade I was ashamed of my younger years and tried to hide them in hopes no one would bring it up.

But guess what? Those stories of my past made me who I am today.

And I am okay with who I am. Shit – I like who I am and where my life is.

But I had to own my past as part of the story and not be ashamed of it.

  • I grew up in a divorced home.
  • I slept on a mattress on the floor.
  • I was a juvenile delinquent who was in and out of the system.
  • I was a single dad.
  • I have been fired from jobs I liked
  • I lost both my parents, lost my source of income, had a major surgery and had a son born in the ICU all within 6 months of each other.

On the flip side of that I have built over 20 projects, business, raised 10 million in capital, helped hundreds of people overcome adversity, I am an author, renegade, lover and happy with who I am.

This is my story. Unfiltered. Unadulterated and OWED.

Today’s lesson – Own your story. Don’t be ashamed of who you are.

Cheers!

Our Daily Struggles & The Universe at Large

Marcus Aurelius – Meditations

“Reflect on how many separate events, both bodily and mental, are taking place in each one of us in the same tiny fragment of time: and then you will not be surprised if many more events, indeed all that come to pass, subsist together in the one and the whole, which we call the universe.

We all have a series of things happening at any given time. From the stress of work, family and finance – to the weight of simple daily responsibility. At any given time we will often have such an assortment of feeling and emotion all happening simultaneously.

When we put that into perspective – there is a great parallel that is drawn between the personal chaos we create and the multiple facets that are all happening outside our reach in the greater universe.

It makes you wonder how we are all connected and the reach into things bigger than ourselves.

Have a great weekend!

Come Alive Be Alert and Show Vigor

I recently picked up an original print of The Strategy or Peace book by then Senator John F. Kennedy. It is a collection of foreign policy speeches, statements on global defense, peace, national security and related domestic issues for the United States during 1960.

Hang in there – this is not a political post as much as it is a mindset toward peace. Not global peace – yet the parallel to inner peace, struggle and self worth.

Chapter 27 – Are We Up to the Task – Washington D.C. January 1, 1960

Certainly it is time for change – time for us, in the words of Walter Lippman, “to come alive and to be alert and to show vigor, and not to keep mouthing the same old slogans, and not to dawdle along in the same old ruts.”

But the primary point is that, whether we like it or not, this is a time of change. As a people that set out to change the world, I think we should like it, however difficult the challenges. For no nation is at its best except under great challenge.

The question for us now is whether in a changing world we will respond in a way befitting “the land of the free and the home of the brave” – whether we will be at our best in these crucial years our world leadership – whether we will measure to the task awaiting us.

Let’s unpack this for a moment. Take out the politics and think about how these words can be applied to us personally. When under extreme adversity will you crumble or will you stand up to the task to build a better foundation for yourself? I am under some personal trials that have questioned the very fabric that I am built from. In these times – I have to look in the mirror and reflect…. Come alive and to be alert and to show vigor.

Cheers!

Clearly Define the Person You Want to Be

Clearly Define the Person You Want to Be

“Who exactly do you want to be? What kind of person do you want to be? What are your personal ideals? Whom do you admire? What are their special traits that you would make your own?”

“It’s time to stop being vague. If you wish to be an extraordinary person, if you wish to be wise, then you should explicitly identify the kind of person you aspire to become. If you have a daybook, write down who are trying to be, so that you can refer to this self- definition. Precisely describe the demeanor you want to adopt so that you may preserve it when you are by yourself or with other people.”  – The Art of Living by Epictetus

Over the past 40 years I have gone through many personal changes. Who I wanted to be and who I became have been through an evolution. You know the cool thing – You can be and do what ever you want at any age. I know it sounds like a card you would get a high school graduation, but it is true.

Start with a simple list. Grab a pen and piece of paper. Write down 10 traits that you like most about the people in your life.

Why do you like these attributes?

What makes them so special?

Highlight or circle the words that you would like to add to your character when people ask about you.

Love, forgiveness, strength, happy, intelligent, driven, beautiful……..

You are what you practice and can be anything you set your mind to becoming.
Have a great weekend!

Opportunity

“Any opportunity that comes to your life is your own creation; it does not come of itself, nor by chance ‘good luck’.”  – Parmahansa Yogananda

Opportunity- Para-Gram

“Any opportunity that comes to your life is your own creation; it does not come of itself, nor by chance ‘good luck’. Opportunity is either created now, or has been created at some time in the near or distant past, by your own rightly guided will.

If you see not opportunity now, create one by your will, which is divine instrument within you. Say, ‘I will do everything for myself with my own will, which is a reflection in me of Divine Will.’ Act on this truth, and opportunity will come to you.”

– Parmahansa Yogananda

As you head into the new year, how are you preparing for new opportunity? From work to personal relationships, what new things will come your way, and how will you use or pass by these opportunities?

Happiness in Giving

“Remember that there is no happiness in having or getting, but only in giving.”

“Realize that true happiness lies within you. Waste no time and effort searching for peace and contentment and joy in the world outside. Remember that there is no happiness in having or getting, but only in giving.”

“Reach out. Share. Smile. Hug. Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself.”

Og Mandino

As we head into the season, it is a great opportunity to remember the gift that is in giving. Have a great week.

3 Things You Can Do to Change Your Life in 10 Minutes or Less

There are so many small changes that you can make daily or weekly to effect your overall happiness, mindset and energy. If you have never run a marathon you shouldn’t set an unrealistic goal of running 5 days a week, if you don’t run at all today. You are setting yourself up for failure.

It is the science of goal setting that will help your path to success.

Below are some things I have implemented in my routine that have shaped my happiness and sense of fulfillment.

  1. Clean Your Workspace: Get all those papers & sticky notes put away. Take a wet wipe, or damp cloth and simply wipe things down. Your mouse, keyboard, monitor and desk area. The sense of clean and arranged work space allows the mind to feel less cluttered and free to make decisions and choices.
  2. Unplug: Our internet went down last night. The kids were watching Netflix, the wife was wanting to watch Hulu and I was working on invoices for open projects that needed to be emailed. At first there was that feeling of panic. Then we all went upstairs, climbed into our bed and relaxed. The kids went to sleep early, mom and I had the chance to tell stories of the week, laugh and simply hang out. It was nice to know that we didn’t need technology to co exist.
  3. Breathe: Your lungs and mind are always working. While sleeping or awake, these functions continue. Yet are you fully aware of the benefits of boosting your PH levels and dropping your O2 levels? It serves as a cleanse, stress release and mind focus exercise that will change the way you think of this basic function.

Breathing Exercise: Sit at your chair in your office or lie on your bedroom floor. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in as much air as you can fit in your lungs. Breathe out – only let half of the air out and take another deep breath in all the way let it half way out.

Do this for the count of 30 breaths in. On the last breath in let all the air out – every piece from your lungs. And sit. How long can your go before having to take a breath? Your first round can be up to 3 minutes. Your body is starting to become oxygenated.

Continue this for 3 rounds. You are now starting to practice the Wim Hof Method. It will change your life, I promise.

Have a great end of week and Friday!

Question Yourself Before Others Do It For You

“I think that’s the single best piece of advice: constantly think about how you could be doing things better, and questioning yourself.” – Elon Musk

The sun is starting to peer through the blinds. You roll over and wait for the snooze button olympics. Then you jump into the shower and jam on the interstate to get to work on time. How often does this sound your like your routine?

Take a step back, take a moment to find something you love. Push yourself. Educate, read and find ways to better yourself.

Make today great!

It’s Not Fear of Failure We Should Worry About

QOTD-What-Matters-

“Our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter.” -Francis Chan

Are you spending time on the things that truly matter? By asking that each of us quantifies that “matter” a bit different. What matters to you may not come close to what matters to your social circle or work associates. When you look at the long term aspects of what you are doing in life, will they matter? Have a great week.
