Adversity and the Golden Chicken

Stage Side - Derek

Adversity.

How do you overcome, cope and look it directly in the face?

How do you react?

What choice do you make?

Do you take the easy way out or do you push through and make the hard decision?

This weekend I had the opportunity to meet some amazing people. You see these people are just like you and I in more ways than not. They found a passion, a purpose and a tremendous will to succeed. When I say success, I don’t mean simply monetary or business gains. I mean personal success – let me explain.

Two stories with a similar out come. Two different set of circumstances. Two very different roads to recovery and roads in life.

Some of the images featured are from the recent Rush Club 007 fitness competition. I will cover that in more detail later this week. This story is about amazing people overcoming adversity.

One took place in the middle east on the first visit to Iraq. As soldiers went village to village to assist the local communities, the temperature in the air was not the most inviting from all. As his Hummer was en route to its next stop, they hit a IED or Improvised Explosive Device.

An improvised explosive device (IED) is a bomb constructed and deployed in ways other than in conventional military action. It may be constructed of conventional military explosives, such as an artillery round, attached to a detonating mechanism. IEDs are commonly used as roadside bombs.

This IED dismantled the Hummer leaving this soldier without use of his leg. He went back in to help his crew members and when he pulled the door open was hit with another IED. The trauma from this event left this soldier without his leg.

That hero’s name is Michael Gallardo.

In June 2007, while on his third Iraq tour with the 82nd Airborne Division, he was met by a burst of gunfire as he led his men into an insurgent-filled house during a nighttime raid on the outskirts of Baghdad.

“One second I was moving forward, the other second I was looking up,” he said. “It was kind of weird, because I didn’t even know where I had gotten shot.”

He had taken a bullet through his right knee, he endured several months of failed surgeries and physical therapy at Walter Reed Army Medical Center before doctors sent him home to Minnesota for recovery and more operations.

This Army veteran who served three tours in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne Division, credits fitness with helping him break out of severe depression after an insurgent’s bullet ended his Army career. (Credit www.stripes.com)

This hero’s name is Derek Weida.

You see these two gentleman are amazing people who have taken a situation and used that to help others, become strong and to set an example. So when the alarm goes off at 5AM to go run, you think I have any excuse that will ever beat what these hero’s have gone through?

The answer is HELL NO!

So tomorrow when you are looking for reasons to not do the things that will make you better – remember these stories, and build your own legacy!

Clearly Define the Person You Want to Be

Clearly Define the Person You Want to Be

“Who exactly do you want to be? What kind of person do you want to be? What are your personal ideals? Whom do you admire? What are their special traits that you would make your own?”

“It’s time to stop being vague. If you wish to be an extraordinary person, if you wish to be wise, then you should explicitly identify the kind of person you aspire to become. If you have a daybook, write down who are trying to be, so that you can refer to this self- definition. Precisely describe the demeanor you want to adopt so that you may preserve it when you are by yourself or with other people.”  – The Art of Living by Epictetus

Over the past 40 years I have gone through many personal changes. Who I wanted to be and who I became have been through an evolution. You know the cool thing – You can be and do what ever you want at any age. I know it sounds like a card you would get a high school graduation, but it is true.

Start with a simple list. Grab a pen and piece of paper. Write down 10 traits that you like most about the people in your life.

Why do you like these attributes?

What makes them so special?

Highlight or circle the words that you would like to add to your character when people ask about you.

Love, forgiveness, strength, happy, intelligent, driven, beautiful……..

You are what you practice and can be anything you set your mind to becoming.
Have a great weekend!

Emotions Are A Habit – Get The Funk Out!

Tony Robbins 1

We all get into a funk. All of us have a day where we wish we never got out of bed. Or the flip side, can’t wait to get back to bed and start over. For years I battled depression. It was something that would take over and for days it would be hard for me to leave the house. Over time these behaviors and mental triggers became a habit.

One day I woke up from the middle of a dark place and said – NO MORE. I no longer accepted a stage of unhappiness as a place I needed to reside. Now i’m not saying that all of the sudden magic “mindset” fairy made things better. I had to find ways to bring happiness as I had forgotten what it meant to be happy.

I made a list of the things that I like doing.

Surfing, Swimming, Gym, Sun, Family, Art, Music, Exploring, Long Drives on my Motorcycle…………..

When I fall into a funk, depression or level of discontent I revert to one of the things I know will kick of the chemical in my brain that makes me happy. FYI that chemical is serotonin.

Being unhappy doesn’t need to become a habit.

Click the image to see a great 2 minute video from Tony Robbins on his thoughts on how to get out of a funk.

Remember:

  • You get what you tolerate
  • Don’t settle
  • Find a bigger reason to exist- Motive Matters!
  • Habits don’t need to control you
  • You don’t need to stay in a stage of unhappiness.
  • Train yourself to be passionate
  • Train yourself to be strong

Together we can get out of this life alive, happy and in a state where we care about those around us.

Cheers!

That Wet Rug Is Going To Kill You

“It is so common for us to carry the weight of the day like a wet rug. Overtime our body over compensates to adjust to the burdens.”

For the past year I have spent time implementing various techniques to help address the stress I was under. From work, family, personal and health issues – we all carry a heavy load. One area that has been instrumental in balancing things out and helping me truly find peace and reasoning – is in something we do daily. By the minute, hour, month year and then we stop.

It is something that is forced us into as we leave the womb.

BREATH

It was 8PM and I was scrolling through my emails. Up pops a feature from Living Social for True Rest Float Spa.  You see I had heard of floating as a great meditation practice. I have also heard that it is super intense and not for those willing to step out and try something new.

Why not? I will book a session. I mean what is the worst that can happen? I can drown, have an out of body experience, the janitor may walk in on me naked, I may get stuck in the pod…… nothing can go wrong right? Sounds like a party I want to be invited to.

The website sums up my reasoning:

Imagine an environment free from gravity, strain, tension, or pain. Imagine if you could Float effortlessly without distractions or unwanted noise. YOU CAN!

You see what I found was something so unique I can only explain it as I shared in the spa journal.

“It is so common for us to carry the weight of the day like a wet rug. Overtime our body compensates to adjust to the burden. Floating takes the weight and removes it completely. Can’t wait to do it again. Just breathe!”

What is Floating and why in the hell would someone actually do it?

The Story of Human Spirit and Competition

The human spirit and drive to overcome adversity is something amazing. From athletes pushing themselves to the limit, to our veterans returning home from a tour of duty. Humans have the ability to do some great things. When you combine those two in a fitness competition, exposition, cameras & stage you get the Rush Club.

I am excited to announce a partnership with Rush Club for the upcoming February 6th event here in Phoenix Arizona.

What is The Rush Club?

Rush Club is a head to head single elimination functional fitness competition. Unlike other competitive fitness events, Rush Club uses weight classes to match up athletes. We take more of a “fitness to weight ratio” approach which makes the event much more exciting to watch. Each workout is announced 30 days prior to the event so that athletes can train and develop proficiency as well as a strategy to maximize effectiveness. The workout length will vary but will never be longer than 10 minutes. The winner get’s the purse, the Rush Club belt, and bragging rights.

Rush Club Competitive Fitness Championship is about creating and telling compelling stories of the human spirit. Stories about heroes who refuse the call to be ordinary and cross the threshold to pursue the call to victory. Stories about how people are tested, how they overcome enemies both inside and out. Stories about seizing the sword, going into battle, and emerging victorious.

The next event is February 6th at Celebrity Theatre and being streamed on Pay Per View.

The event is less than a cup of coffee and proceeds are going back to veterans.)

The best have graced the Rush Club arena and we are just getting started. Join us Feb 6th at www.rushclubnation.com to watch the live stream. Watch Derek Weida take on defending adaptive lower champion Mike Gallardo for the adaptive lower title!

Hope to see at the event!

Make Full Use of What Happens to You

“Every difficulty in life presents us with an opportunity to turn inward and to invoke our own submerged resources. The Trials we endure can and should introduce us to our strengths.” The Art of Living, By Epictetus

We are headed into the second week of the new year. Many of us set goals, objectives and reasons to make this 2016 something special. Did you plan to spend more time with your family? Was it a financial goal? Was it simply to be more happy?

What kind of traction are you gaining in setting these goals on auto pilot? How are you using the trials from the past as strengths and learning pillars for the future?

I just landed in Salt Lake City Utah for a week long adventure. You see one goal I have set for 2016 is to focus on the areas that brandish results versus spreading myself thin. One of the other goals is to do more of what I love. And like many – I have a financial goal.

I am aiming to hit three birds with one stone. I have taken on the responsibility of building a sales and marketing team for a kick ass technology company named UK2 – 100TB. The new roads are open – and I am taking full advantage! The above image is my drive over the snowy canyon – into the unknown, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Kick Up Your Metabolism, Hydrate and Burn Fat First Think in the Morning

Through interviews for The Healthy Primate Podcast I have the opportunity to talk with some world class athletes, authors & entrepreneurs. In this I often ask what the first 60 minutes of the day looks like. Specific to any routine, diet, work out or other aspect that start with. One thing has been continuous, morning hydration. The morning water routine is not simply serving as hydration. There are some other amazing aspects that all support water within the first 30 minutes of waking.

Recently NY Times Best Selling Author and Endurance Coach Brian Mackenzie posted his recipe for the water routine we discuss in his interview.

  • 1/2 – 1 full lemon squeezed into 30oz of water.
  • Dash or 2 of Himalayan pink salt
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 3 drops of black pepper extract.
  • ** I recommend over ice – which I will explain below

Why? Hydration is no longer a factor in my day. The absorption that occurs because of the salt and pepper is absurd, and the lemon/apc is neutralized in the body which helps inflammation, digestion, fight infections, and a slew of other things including vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, & potassium.

Consistency is key. Try this for 5 days, then take a couple days of removing it.

** I add ice to help jump start my metabolism and to help my body in the fat burning process first thing.

Self Mastery Depends on Self Honesty

“Know first who you are and what you’re capable of.” – Epictetus

Just as nothing great is created instantly, the same goes for the perfecting of our talents and aptitudes. We are always learning, always growing. It is right to accept challenges. This is how we progress to the next level of intellectual, physical, or moral development. Still, don’t kid yourself: If you try to be something or someone you are not, you belittle your true self and end up not developing in those areas that you would have excelled at quite naturally.

Within the divine order, we each have our own special calling. Listen to yours and follow it faithfully.

The above comes from one of my favorite books, The Art of Living by the Stoic – Epictetus.

With the road to 2016 now only 2 days away, I couldn’t help but personally reflect on the above passage. The areas I have found the most personal growth is when I started caring less of what others would think, and focused on myself and others in my life that really mater.

We all have our own personal calling. Are you listening? Make today great.

Opportunity

“Any opportunity that comes to your life is your own creation; it does not come of itself, nor by chance ‘good luck’.”  – Parmahansa Yogananda

Opportunity- Para-Gram

“Any opportunity that comes to your life is your own creation; it does not come of itself, nor by chance ‘good luck’. Opportunity is either created now, or has been created at some time in the near or distant past, by your own rightly guided will.

If you see not opportunity now, create one by your will, which is divine instrument within you. Say, ‘I will do everything for myself with my own will, which is a reflection in me of Divine Will.’ Act on this truth, and opportunity will come to you.”

– Parmahansa Yogananda

As you head into the new year, how are you preparing for new opportunity? From work to personal relationships, what new things will come your way, and how will you use or pass by these opportunities?
