Well here it is. Get ready, set and off to the summer we go! This is one of my favorite times of year. Living in the desert, there is one thing I talk about with my family daily, hydration! Water is the essence of life.
How much water should you drink each day? How many answers and variations have you heard to address this simple question? Mayo Clinic studies have a few good points of reference to at least put you in the right direction. But keep in mind, your water needs depend on many factors, including your health, how active you are and where you live.
Water makes up roughly 60 percent of your body weight. Every system, organ and function of your body depends on water. How does water help: water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells, and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.
What happens if you lack proper hydration? Dehydration is the big one. Without proper water and hydration, the body lacks the necessities to carry out normal body and mind functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.
The big question: How Much Water Do I Need Daily?
“So how much fluid does the average, healthy adult living in a temperate climate need? The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake (AI) for men is roughly about 13 cups (3 liters) of total beverages a day. The AI for women is about 9 cups (2.2 liters) of total beverages a day.”Source Mayo Clinic
This is really based on a series of variables such as where you live and body composition.
CamelBak has built a water calculator that will help really determine the amount you need daily. It helps outline how much water you need to consume for maximum performance, and hydration.
